FIANNA Fail leader Micheal Martin has defended his party's low numbers of female candidates in May's election.

Mr Martin was speaking after canvassing in south Kerry with Norma Moriarty.

Only 17pc of candidates contesting local elections for Fianna Fail are women.

"We've dealt with this before. In some counties they've reduced the number of councillors which has inhibited our opportunities to get more women in," said Mr Martin. "We want more women in. We've made a lot of progress in Dublin where in the city 30pc of our candidates are women."
