Fewer drink drivers

THE June bank holiday this year has been one of the safest in recent years on our roads.

Nine people died on the roads during the long weekend in 2008, compared to five deaths this year. There was also a 62pc reduction in the number of people caught drink-driving, with 420 in 2008 compared to 162 this year.

NO JAIL FOR BANKER THIEF

A BANK official who raided the accounts of elderly customers has avoided a prison sentence after being sentenced to community service. Geraldine Mulvey (33), of Corry, Co Longford, carried out dozens of fraudulent transactions totalling €55,000.

She pleaded guilty at Longford Circuit Court last December.

INVENTIONS WIN AWARDS

A MOBILE app to assist visually impaired shoppers and a tool to better diagnose cardiac disease are among the innovations that have won the inaugural DCU President's Awards for Innovation.

Other shortlisted creations from staff and students ranged from Focus Gum, a chewing gum to enhance cognitive function, to ECOVolve, a zero-emission electric vehicle for use on construction sites.
