A man in his 30s has been arrested, and a gun recovered, after he was chased by uniformed gardaí last night.

Officers also found ammunition and seized a car following in the incident in west Dublin.

"At approximately 9.50pm a man fled from a car while being followed by uniformed Gardaí in the Collinstown area of west Dublin," a garda spokesman said.

"The man was pursed on foot in to a nearby park," he added.

The man was arrested and taken to Lucan Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939.

The firearm, described as a handgun, has been removed to the Garda Technical Bureau for ballistic and forensic examination.

A follow up search in the park lead to the discovery of a firearm and a loaded magazine.

The car the man was travelling in was also seized.

One of the three officers who pursued the man is a female garda who is a recent graduate of Templemore and yesterday was only her fourth day on the job.

The gardaí were unarmed and were carrying out a routine uniform patrol at the time the arrest.

"It was a good detection on their part," a source told Independent.ie

The investigation is ongoing.
