Feast of Irish design genius at Create
When Shelly Corkery, fashion director at Brown Thomas, sat down to select this year's participants in Create, a celebration of the very best in Irish design and craft, little did she suspect that her talent list of stars would run to over 65.
But that is how it is in the creative island of Ireland these days and an extraordinary wealth of emerging talent in fashion and craft can be viewed over three floors of the Grafton Street store for the next six weeks.
As retailing goes, it's a very tactile experience and you can touch the craft and try on the clothes from this showcase, which reflects handsomely on what we do best in this country - and that's originality.
The spreadsheet of talents runs from milliners, jewellers, shoe and clothing designers, to potters, crystal makers, bookbinders, candle makers and furniture creators.
Perhaps best of all is that five years after Create was conceived as a smallish venture to provide a commercial platform for new designers during the recession, it is now a total store experience and consumers will be able to engage and interact with the designers and buy from their pop-up shops and installations until August 16.
Some of the pop-ups go on tour to BT's Cork and Limerick stories until September 21.
The windows too have been taken over and Dr Joseph Walsh's ash furniture is total eye candy, guaranteed to draw gasps of admiration because of its construction.
