Fears for future of maternity ward

Fears grew last night that the midwifery-led maternity unit in Cavan General Hospital will have to close.

The highly-praised unit, staffed only by midwives -- in contrast to most consultant-led units -- is only one of two in the country. The other is in Drogheda.

It deals with women with uncomplicated pregnancies.

Sources said last night the unit may have to close next year because of budget cuts.

However, a spokeswoman for the hospital stressed no decision has been made. She said the hospital had not yet received its budget for 2012.
