The father of former TD Patrick Nulty died suddenly yesterday.
Paddy Nulty, from Corduff in Dublin 15, was a popular figure in the area.
His death comes just a month after his son resigned as an independent TD.
Patrick Nulty walked away from national politics following revelations that he sent inappropriate Facebook messages to a 17-year-old girl.
His father Paddy and mother Rose strongly defended their 31-year-old son in the wake of the controversy.
"He's a good lad," Mr Nulty said when asked about his son.
Patrick Nulty's decision to resign immediately and publicly acknowledge his indiscretion was acknowledged, even by his political opponents.
But the last few weeks have been extremely stressful for the former deputy and his family.
Mr Nulty apologised for his behaviour and said that the "message was sent while under the influence of alcohol".
A local member of the clergy yesterday confirmed the former TD's father passed away suddenly yesterday.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
