Father baffled over golf ball in dead man's throat
THE father of a man who was found to have a golf ball lodged in his throat after his death has said they have "no idea" how it happened.
"We don't know what happened, it's with the coroner now," the father told the Irish Independent.
The incident is being investigated by both the gardai and Dublin Coroner's Office.
The Dublin man died suddenly in St James's Hospital last month.
A post mortem was carried out but nothing was found. The exact cause of death was not determined and the remains were removed to a funeral home where the golf ball was discovered by staff.
Gardai were immediately called and began an investigation.
A spokesman for the hospital said they were fully co-operating with the investigation.
He said it will look at all aspects of the case, including whether the golf ball was placed in the man's throat after his body was taken from the hospital and before it arrived at the funeral home.
It is understood that foul play is not suspected in relation to the man's sudden death.
