Valentia Coast Guard was alerted to the incident at around 3pm by local lifeguards after the two kayakers were washed overboard in Galway.

Galway Bay RNLI, the Shannon based Coast Guard helicopter R115, and Doolin Coast Guard unit were deployed to lead the rescue.

The two kayakers were located within an hour and were recovered by Galway Bay lifeboat, who confirmed they were safe and well.

The alarm had been raised by two local lifeguards in the Tracht/Kinvara area of Galway.

Mark Buckley and Niall Hanley made contact with the coastguard when they became concerned about the safety of the two kayakers.

Coast Guard Watch officers on duty in Valentia commended the two lifeguards for what they called “their vigilance, timeliness of their report and for piecing together information on the casualties”.
