A community is "in shock" after a father and son lost their lives in a tragic house fire in the early hours of the morning.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 5am at a building on Market Street, Co Sligo.

Gardaí confirmed to Independent.ie that two men were rushed to University Hospital Sligo where they were later pronounced dead.

One of the victims was aged in his sixties, while the younger man was aged in his thirties.

They have been named locally as Sonny and Sean Harte.

"It's a terrible tragedy. People are just devastated by the tragic loss of life," the Independent councillor told Independent.ie.

"The deceased are members of a large, hugely respected local family.

"People are waking up to the tragedy this morning and just coming to terms with it.

"My sympathies go out to all the family."

People Before Profit councillor Gino O'Boyle described the two men's deaths as a "big loss".

"The whole town is in shock. The two of them were very well-respected," Cllr O'Boyle said.

"I was speaking to both of them yesterday, it is such a tragedy for the town and such a big loss for the family."

Gardaí have preserved the scene and are carrying out a technical examination.

It is understood the fire did not start in suspicious circumstances.
