Farmer finds missing man's decomposed body

Tom Shiel

A farmer cutting silage in meadows near Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, made a grim discovery – a man's body.

The partly decomposed remains were removed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar for a post-mortem, which was carried out yesterday.

The remains were identified as that of John Kerrigan, a 76-year-old man who lived in an apartment at Main Street, Ballinrobe. He had been missing for a month.

It is believed that Mr Kerrigan died of natural causes.

Garda units, including a garda sub-aqua team and civilian divers, had searched extensively for Mr Kerrigan since he was first reported missing on May 20.

A source in the Kilkeeran area where Mr Kerrigan's body was found said yesterday: "It appears he wandered some distance from a road into meadows and became ill there or perhaps could not find his way out.

"It was lucky the remains were not caught up in the remains of the silage machine. The machinery driver was looking out for stones and spotted the body in time."
