A teenager had to flee to the safety of Dundrum Town Centre after being stabbed a number of times on a nearby street late last night.
Stephen Bingham (19) ran to the Movies At Dundrum cinema complex in the upmarket shopping centre after being set upon on the Sandyford Road at 11.15pm.
The terrified Ballinteer native was immediately attended to by staff at the cinema and the Town Centre.
An ambulance and gardai were called and Bingham was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with several knife wounds.
Although he suffered multiple injuries none of them are believed to be life-threatening.
A spokesperson for Dundrum Town Centre told the Herald that the young man ran there after the attack.
“We don’t know what the background to the attack is, just that the young man ran up the street from the direction of the taxi rank,” said the spokesman.
“He ran into the cinema complex looking for safety, shelter and assistance, and that was all provided for him,” he added.
“The gardai and an ambulance were called and from that point on it was a garda matter,” the spokesperson explained.
Stephen Bingham’s family in Hillview Grove in Ballinteer said they did not know why he was attacked. “We don’t know what happened, it’s all very early so we don’t have much information,” said a man who identified himself as Stephen’s brother.
“My mother is with him in the hospital. He was injured a few times but we hear he is going to be ok,” he added.
Members of the garda technical bureau this morning carried out a forensic examination of the scene where Bingham ran into the cinema complex.
Gardai at Dundrum are investigating the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
