Relatives of an Irish woman and her daughter who were killed in a horrific collision in Poland have been told a man has been charged in connection with the incident.

Yvonne Buchtrup (30), a daughter of well-known horse breeder John Long and his wife Angela, died along with her daughter Ella (2) when their car was struck by another vehicle on Wednesday. Ms Buchtrup's husband Soren and their infant son Noah, who were also in the car, escaped injury.

According to a relative of the family, the Department of Foreign Affairs told the Irish woman's parents that a man was "arrested and has been charged" by police.

He said he did not know what he had been charged with.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Birr are investigating the death of a woman in her 60s after her car collided with a lorry on the N52 Kilcormac to Tullamore road near Kilcormac, Co Offaly.

Another woman in her 60s was also injured in the crash.
