THE family of a young man who was seriously injured in a hammer attack are keeping vigil at his Beaumont Hospital bed after he underwent emergency surgery.

Dave Kilbane (23), pictured, from Barna, Co Galway, suffered serious head injuries when he was attacked with a hammer or a mallet in the early hours of Sunday morning at Rossaveal Pier in Connemara.

The young man, who has a love of cars and motor sports, had been socialising with friends at the pier following the Galway International Rally.

Up to 100 rally followers travelling in 40 cars had gathered at the pier when the incident occurred shortly before 4am. A dispute allegedly broke out among two gangs of youths and Mr Kilbane was assaulted.

A 22-year-old man from the Ballinasloe area of Galway was arrested in relation to the incident on Sunday evening.

He was last night being held at Millstreet garda station. Gardai are now trawling through CCTV footage.

Meanwhile, locals have raised concerns about gangs of so-called 'boy racers' causing commotion in the area over the weekend.

Up to 200 cars were reported to have been speeding in the area. Hundreds travelled through the nearby town of Spiddal at 3am on Sunday, disturbing residents.

Gardai at Salthill have appealed for information and can be contacted on 091-514720 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
