Family call for driver release

Demonstrators yesterday demanded the release of a lorry driver held in France after illegal cigarettes were found in the truck he was driving.

Paul Barrett (38), from Fethard, Co Tipperary, has been detained in France since March.

French customs authorities impounded the truck after finding around six million cigarettes.

Mr Barrett was questioned and released but was arrested a week later when he collected the vehicle for his employers.

Mr Barrett's family demonstrated outside the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin yesterday calling for his release.

The family claim he collapsed in prison and is losing weight, and has nothing to do with the cigarettes.
