A FAMILY business is creating 41 new jobs as overseas demand for its services increases.

Exports account for three-quarters of the total sales at Shay Murtagh Precast Ltd, which manufactures concrete products.

Shay Murtagh is a second-generation family business based in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

The company, which was established in 1981, already employs 75 people and is looking to hire civil engineers, technicians, quality assurance and general operatives. It has now invested about €3m in state-of-the-art technology.

Managing director Ciaran Murtagh said they were delighted to be both creating new jobs, and securing the existing ones.

"We have invested a lot of energy in a strategic and focused expansion into the UK infrastructure market," Mr Murtagh said.

They have been contracted to carry out work on the new underground Crossrail tunnel in London.

The new technology being bought by the company will be used for the production of precast concrete tunnel segments.
