A FAMILY told how they are lucky to be alive after a massive tree fell on their car – with three generations inside it.
Colette Brennan, her mother and her three children – the youngest just 14 weeks old – escaped after massive storm winds swept across the midlands and sent a tree tumbling onto her family car.
The mother spoke of her "shock" and told how it felt "surreal" after the tree stunned onlookers when it toppled onto their car in Portlaoise, near the town's hospital.
It was the way that the tree fell that saved the lives of the family, from Ballylynan in the county. She told how it swept the car to one side, so they did not take the full impact.
Colette's husband Oliver said his wife and family were in shock last night. "I'd say there could be 40 tonnes in that tree," he said after recovering the car.
Portlaoise priest Fr Paddy Byrne told of his shock as he drove past the scene.
"The scene was horrific because the tree had come down so far I barely saw the car. They were very blessed to have come out of it."
