Families' lucky escape after fire rips through four adjoining houses

Families had a lucky escape after a fire ripped through four adjoining houses, severely damaging the properties but without causing any injuries.

The blaze broke out in the Claremont Estate in Navan, Co Meath at around 8pm last night.

Firefighters battled to get the fire under control - however the roofs of four houses were destroyed, along with severe internal damage to the upper storeys.

An elderly woman on oxygen was among those rescued by neighbours after the fire broke out.

And it is understood that one resident was in her kitchen when she was alerted to the emergency by a neighbour who knocked on her door.
