Factory to lay off most of its staff after fire

Most of the 65 workers at a timber processing factory are to be laid off after a fire.

The main timber processing plant at Woodfab, in Aughrim, Co Wicklow, was gutted in the 10-hour blaze on Sunday, hitting all operations at the complex.

John Brady, the managing director of the family-run sawmill, said that he had informed SIPTU of the lay-offs which will be temporary in nature.

"The lay-offs are regrettable but we have no alternative. The main production building at the factory has been burnt to the ground," Mr Brady added.

"But it is our intention to get back in business as quickly as possible. As soon as we get the all-clear from our insurers, we will start rebuilding the plant."

Gardai yesterday ruled out foul play as a cause of the fire.
