Face of father shot three times as he answers door
THIS is father of one Shane Mooney, who was shot three times on the doorstep of his father's home in Co Meath last night.
Mr Mooney (39) was hit twice in the upper body and once in the leg after he answered a call to the door of the house in the townland of Dowth near Slane at 9.45pm.
He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where his injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening.
Plastic evidence markers were placed in several locations by members of the garda technical bureau carrying out a forensic examination of the scene.
Neighbours reacted with shock to the shooting in the historical Co Meath valley.
“My son was going to bed last night when he spotted an ambulance at the house, but Shane's father is in ill-health so we thought it might berelated to that,” said Kathleen Devin.
“I couldn't believe it when my daughter rang me this morning and was asking me who was shot in Dowth.
“She had heard it on the news, and then when I looked up the road and saw the gardai I put two and two together.
“I'm shocked that Shane was shot. He's a quiet lad, his family are nice quiet people.”
Mr Mooney works as a security guard.
A motive for the shooting was not immediately known, and gardai are keeping an open mind in their investigation.
However, it appears Mr Mooney was the intended target of the attack.
Investigations are continuing today, and detectives are hoping to interview Mr Mooney when doctors say he is well enough.
