Extent of fire damage to cathedral revealed

THESE are the charred remains of the historic cathedral gutted by fire on Christmas Day.

Our picture, by Willie Farrell, shows for the first time the inside of St Mel's Cathedral in Co Longford following the blaze.

Tight security surrounds the remains, where teams are working daily to clear the debris left in the wake of the fire.

Teams have been lifted to higher levels on the building to clear debris from above.

Locals are now waiting to hear plans for the future of the site, with restoration expected to cost millions of euro.
