Ex-Taoiseach Brian Cowen sleeps rough for charity
Former Taoiseach Brian Cowen slept rough last night, as part of a drive to raise funds for homelessness.
He may have been in the rather grand surrounds of Birr Castle, but Mr Cowen joined a group who were spending the night outside as part of the Sleep Out For Simon.
Arriving after darkness, he mingled among the crowd and chatted to the brave souls making their make-shift beds for the night. Mr Cowen, a member of the Midlands Simon Community Board for the past year, said that "obviously in better times there was more funding" for homelessness but now innovative solutions needed to be found.
Each person taking part in the 'sleep out' had to raise €2,500.
This will guarantee 103 bed nights for a homeless person in need of support from the Midlands Simon Community.
