Experts in a flap as bird returns after 30 years

A BIRD not seen in Ireland for almost three decades resulted in a flutter of activity by birdwatchers yesterday.

Several dozen birdwatchers travelled to the Kylemore Abbey estate in Co Galway, in an effort to catch a glimpse of the Belted Kingfisher, or Ceryle Alcyon, which was last spotted in Ireland in 1985.

The bird is native to North America and usually does not find its way to our shores.

It is believed the bird got caught in the Gulf Stream while avoiding storms on its annual migration south and was carried to Ireland by the strong wind currents.
