Expat drowns near Alicante

AN IRISHMAN has drowned while swimming alone off the coast of Spain.

The 65-year-old died off a beach on the Costa Blanca which had no lifeguards on duty.

Five women swam out when they saw a body floating face down in the sea at around 2pm on Saturday.

They managed to drag the pensioner to the shore but he was already dead.

It is believed he was an expatriate living in the town of San Fulgencio, 25 miles from Alicante.
