Expanding gas may have been the reason for the manhole explosion on Baggot Street this morning.

Rush hour commuters had a lucky escape this morning after a manhole blew up on Baggot Street in Dublin city centre.

The incident happened just after 9am at the Merrion Road/Baggot Street junction.

Dark smoke was billowing from the manhole before an explosion saw the cover blow up in the air, missing passing commuters "by inches", according to passing commuters.

Sources at Dublin Fire Brigade said, “expanding gas because of the unusual heat is the possible cause of the explosion.”

Eyewitness  Eoin Ó Súilleabháin was on the street when the incident happened and tweeted about it.

"Manhole just exploded off Baggot St! No one hurt as far as I can see....lid flew up a few feet!"

Gardai and Dublin Fire Brigade were both probing the incident.
