Ex-ministers are paid nearly €2m over two years

Only four golden parachute recipients have gifted the money back into State coffers

Ex-ministers Mary Hanafin and John Gormley

FORMER cabinet ministers in the most reviled government in the history of the State have been paid just under €2m in severance pay since 2011.

The year before last, 41 former ministers/office-holders shared out €1,105,533 and a further €718,884 in 2012.

In many cases, these payments were boosted by ministerial and TD pensions. The figures were given in reply to a Dail question from Sinn Fein's Mary Lou McDonald.

Amid the roll-call of ministers, one of the top beneficiaries of the 'golden parachute', which is designed to compensate ministers for 'loss of office' and to ease them back into commercial and working life, was the former Attorney General Paul Gallagher SC.

The former AG also benefited from payments of more than €106,000. These consisted of €24,205 in 2011 and €81,886 in 2012.

Other top beneficiaries of the scheme included former Green Party leader John Gormley, who received €99,492 in 2011 and a further €26,625 in 2012.

The current Green leader, Eamon Ryan, received €86,000 over 2011 and 2012 while numerous high profile former ministers such as Mary Coughlan, who received more than €68,000 between 2011 and 2012, and Mary Hanafin who received €51,492 in 2011 have also been beneficiaries.

Former Green Minister Ciaran Cuffe received €54,451 while former Seanad Cathaoirleach Donie Cassidy received a pay-off of €24,205.

The payments have been abolished for future office-holders. However, former ministers such as Noel Dempsey and Dermot Ahern were also beneficiaries of the scheme.

The figures also reveal that four out of 42 former ministers have gifted all their severance payments to the state. These are Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, Eamon O Cuiv, Brendan Smith and former Labour Junior Minister Roisin Shorthall.

The former Labour Housing Minister, Willie Penrose, has also received more than €28,000 in severance payments since his resignation from Cabinet in 2011.
