The son of former GAA star Ger Feeney paid a moving tribute to his dad during an emotional funeral service yesterday.

More than 1,000 people packed the Church of the Holy Rosary in Castlebar, Co Mayo, to mourn the former Mayo footballer, husband and father of four.

The huge attendance was led by his wife Kathleen and children, Richard, Alan, Claire and Dara.

Ger (56) died when he and close friend, Donal McEllin (63) got into difficulties as they attempted to board a motor cruiser in Inishbofin harbour in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Castlebar curate, Fr John Murray, described Ger as a talented and tenacious wing-back in his playing days and a man who enjoyed his work in the ESB and socialising.

The funeral of Donal McEllin takes place in Castlebar at midday today.
