A drunken man who was told to wait to be seen in a hospital waiting room, later returned with two hammers and went on a rampage smashing doors.

The incident occurred at Naas General Hospital where a number of children were present at the time.

A witness told Independent.ie that the children watched in horror as the man smashed glass in the hospital at around 10pm on Saturday August 13.

“There were children present and were cowering under chairs in fear,” the witness said.

Gardai confirmed that criminal damage was done to the hospital at around 10:15pm and that a glass door was broken.

Nobody has been arrested but gardaí said they are investigating the matter.

In a statement, Naas General Hospital confirmed that an incident of criminal damage occurred in the Emergency Department on Saturday night.

"This matter is being investigated by the Gardaí. The hospital regrets any distress which was caused to patients as a result of this incident."
