Evicted man in siege stand-off

Gardai were last night dealing with a siege situation in Limerick after a man barricaded himself into a building and threatened to harm himself, writes David Raleigh.

Around 20 gardai, including the armed Regional Support Unit, surrounded the apartment on John's Street for several hours as the tense stand-off went on. Specially trained gardai, including a negotiator and a garda who specialises in dealing with sieges, were deployed to the scene.

Locals in the built-up residential area said the man had threatened to throw a child out of the window. However, gardai later said the man was alone in the apartment.

According to gardai, the man aged in his 40s had barricaded himself into the apartment when he re-entered the dwelling after earlier being evicted.
