Eugene Moloney: He was the best guy I ever met says grieving Vietnamese girlfriend
THE grieving girlfriend of Eugene Moloney yesterday described the 55-year-old journalist as the "best guy she ever met."
Chichi Tran, who lives in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, said she was told about Mr Moloney's death on Monday morning by his family. She said she intends travelling here for his funeral.
The couple first met in 1998 while Mr Moloney was on holiday in the south-east Asian country.
"We have travelled together and I went with him to many different countries," she told the Irish Independent.
"I was talking to him three days before he died.
"He is the best, best guy I ever met. I know that wherever we travelled together, he's always the person who takes care of everything.
"He had the best heart."
Mr Moloney's family said his funeral was not expected to take place for several days. It will be held in Dublin, but he will be buried in Fahan, Co Donegal, alongside his mother Margaret, who died in 2007.
Ms Tran said she and Mr Moloney met at her cousin's restaurant in Vietnam, where she worked at the time. They became close friends, and began dating seven or eight years ago.
"We were about to see each other again in three weeks because a friend is due to get married in the Philippines. Eugene said he would come to the wedding and I would meet him there," she said.
"I can't believe this has happened. It is so sad. I keep looking on the news every day."
Mr Moloney's nephew Oisin Leech yesterday said he was like "a gentle big brother".
Mr Leech, who plays with the band the Lost Brothers, said: "Uncle Eugene was a great pal and he never missed a Lost Brothers gig."
