Escaping by a hare's breadth

THE big thaw failed to arrive in time to save dozens of St Stephen's Day sporting events -- but that will be little comfort to these furry fellas.

The snow and frost has continued to cause havoc to the festive sporting calendar. Yesterday's meeting at Leopardstown was rescheduled, while in Co Kerry the Kingdom Coursing Cup Meeting for Ballybeggan Park in Tralee was also called off.

Coursing staff, including Martin and Wane Enright, Liam Brassell, and Noel Leen, tended the 150 hares that had been brought to the Tralee venue for the annual festive coursing event.

However, the hares' respite will only last for a few more days: the meeting has been rescheduled and gets under way on Saturday, January 1 and continues on January 2.
