Irish Water's parent company Ervia spent hundreds of euro on Christmas trees this festive season.

Figures released to the Irish Independent show the controversial utility spent a total of €1,350 on just three Christmas trees and their decorations.

Officials within Irish Water responded to a Freedom of Information request sent by this newspaper stating that no money was spent on Christmas decorations.

However, a spokeswoman for Irish Water confirmed that money had been spent by parent company Ervia for festive decorations.

The utility confirmed the money spent on festive decorations came from Ervia's budget and not Irish Water.

A spokeswoman for Irish Water said that Ervia installed three Christmas trees at their offices on Colville House and Foley Street.

Meanwhile, staff at Irish Water have not been treated to a Christmas party.

The utility said it was against company policy to hold a Christmas party.
