Electrifying line-up for Picnic – and a price cut to boot
IT started off nine years ago with a few small tents and is now one of the best established music festivals in Europe – as well as being the subject of a fierce legal battle between its founder and chief shareholder.
As the line-up for the Electric Picnic was announced amid tasteful scenes in Dublin's Fitzwilliam Square, Bjork, Fatboy Slim and Arctic Monkeys shared the headlines with the fact that ticket prices have been substantially reduced.
Regarding the legal battle currently taking place between them, Melvin Benn – managing director of Festival Republic Dublin Limited – expressed regret that creator John Reynolds was not present at the launch, claiming that he "does not know what the issue is about".
"The Picnic is bigger than either of us – it is part of Irish culture," he said. "We have a very shared vision of what the Electric Picnic is."
The festival on the last weekend in August will be headlined by quirky 90s popstress Bjork.
Franz Ferdinand, 90s stars the Eels and legendary guitarist Johnny Marr will also feature.
And in a "surprise" addition, organisers last night confirmed My Bloody Valentine; The Knife; the Wu Tang Clan and Black Uhuru will also wow the crowd at Laois.
Also on the bill are Cavan foursome the Strypes – who have wowed the audience on 'Jools Holland' twice over the past 18 months and are touring Japan this month.
Organisers hope 30,000 will attend this year – and the usual quirky touches such as hot tubs, a "foot hospital", theatrical performances, shamanic journeys, dancers, sculptors and relaxing chillout zones will feature.
Loyal fans will be contacted by Ticketmaster to allow them to avail of a special price of €85 for a Sunday ticket.
Those who book before May 27 can avail of a weekend ticket price of €149.50 for previous patrons of three Electric Picnics; €169.50 for those who have previously attended one Electric Picnic, or €189.50 for those who have never been before.
