Wicklow County Council – Labour to be big loser

LABOUR looks set to be the big loser in Wicklow, where all of its six county council seats are under threat.
None of its councillors from 2009 are running for the party this time around - due to resignations and councillors stepping down - but its five new candidates pulled in just 3% of the county’s first preferences.
Sinn Fein and Independent candidates have performed strongly, with Jennifer Whitmore, a Stephen Donnelly candidate, elected on the first count in Greystones on Saturday night with almost double the quota. John Brady in Bray, John Snell in Wicklow and Gerry O’Neill in Baltinglass were all elected for Sinn Fein on the first count.
Fianna Fail will be happy with their return as they look set to improve on their four seats last time out with Pat Fitzgerald and Pat Kennedy - both in Arklow - elected on the first count.
