FIANNA Fail candidate Thomas Byrne says he may seek a recount if there are fewer than 3,000 votes separating him from his running mate Pat 'The Cope' Gallagher at the next count.

The results of the fifth count are expected shortly, following the distribution of Jim Higgins’ votes. It is expected to lead to the election of Fine Gael's Mairead McGuinness and possibly Sinn Fein's Matt Carthy.

Byrne is currently in sixth place in the four-seater constituency. Luke 'Ming' Flanagan remains the only candidate elected.

Independent Marian Harkin and Fianna Fail's Pat 'The Cope' Gallagher are battling it out for the final seat.
