Mayo Claremorris area: First count

FINE Gael's Patsy O'Brien topped the poll in Claremorris early this morning and was one of three candidates elected on the first count.

He received 2,347 first preference votes and easily surpassed the required 1,943 quota.

He was joined by Independent Richard Finn on 2,050 votes and Sinn Fein's Gerry Murray on 1,971 votes,  in securing the first seats in the seven-seater constituency.

The first count concluded just before 2.30am this morning. The second count is now underway.
