Longford/Westmeath: Update

Published 25/05/2014 | 00:39

There was a rare piece of good news for Labour when Cllr. Johnnie Penrose, brother of Longford/Westmeath TD Willie Penrose was elected to Westmeath County Council in the 8th count of the Mullingar-Kilbeggan Local Electoral Area.

Fianna Fail's Avril Whitney, a protege of FF TD Robert Troy, was also elected on the 8th Count.

The Mullingar-Coole area could have a sting in its tail for SF's Sorca Clarke, who looked a sure thing earlier on. Transfers have not gone her way, and Independent candidate Brian Fagan (who contested the by-election) may well pip her at the post as remaining transfers from rural candidates eliminated and soon-to-be-elimated may go his way instead of hers.

Meanwhile, in Mullingar-Kilbeggan, by-election candidate Denis Leonard has just been eliminated on the 6th count.
