Longford electoral area: Fine Gael vote hols up

Gareth Naughton

Fine Gael’s vote held up well in Longford with the party’s candidates topping the polls across the county.

The party was bound to lose numbers with the council reducing in size but officials said they got out a good vote and met their targets. Fianna Fail’s vote was down but marginally so.

Independents polled well but there was change of guard with Gerry Warnock surprising everyone to take the seat of outgoing Longford town mayor Paul Connell (Ind).

Sinn Fein did very poorly in Longford in 2009 but the national surge was evident this time around with first preference votes increasing substantially in the north and south of the county.
