The Labour Party is having a painful day in Dublin with some estimates that it will lose more than half of its 19 seats on on the city council.

Outgoing Lord Mayor Oisin Quinn is in a battle to retain his seat in Rathgar-Rathmines while Emer Costello's European Parliament seat looks almost certain to go.

But Dublin South East TD Kevin Humphreys told Independent.ie that he remains hopeful that Labour will hang on to at least 10 seats in City Hall.

And he said "it's still all to play for in Europe". He said that exit polls and tallies "have been wrong in the past".

Deputy Humphreys said Labour can still win back lost support before the next general election saying "support will come back as the economy recovers."
