Sitting Cllr Tom Welby (Ind) was the first candidate elected from the Connemara district in Galway County as his 2,291 votes easily saw him across the line in the first count.

Requiring a quota of 1,685 votes, Welby easily retained his seat in the west of the county and looks set to be joined by Fine Gael's Niamh Byrne and Eileen Mannion, who are both 375 votes short of the required.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fail could be set for a positive day in Connemara with Sean O Tuairisg, Seamus Walsh, Noel Thomas, Mairtín Lee and Josie Conneely in hot pursuit of the remaining eight seats.

Elsewhere, after two counts, no candidate has made it past the quota of 1,806 votes in the Loughrea area, with Gerry Finnerty (FF) and Anne Rabbitte (FF) edging closer to the mark.

The full recount of the Athenry/Oranmore area - as requested by Cathal Moran (FF) -  has begun, while counting for the final district, Tuam, has also commenced.
