Galway City Council: Independents top all three electoral areas

The government parties were given a hiding by voters in Galway city. Independents came out on top in all three electoral areas for the City Council.

In City East and City West ex-Progressive Democrats flag bearers Terry O’Flaherty and Donal Lyons—both noth non-party-- were the kingpins.

Mairead Farrell, niece of the IRA volunteer of the same name shot dead in Gibraltar by the SAS in 1988, make a major breakthrough for Sinn Fein, winning a seat in City East, while Fine Gael and Labour each lost two seats.

Outgoing Mayor, Padraig Conneely FG was fighting for his political life as the vote in City Central dragged on late into the day.
