MARY Hanafin took a seat on the first count with 1,501 votes in the Blackrock ward of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown.
Hanafins supporters were jubilant at her success after defying party leadership.
Fine Gael's Marie Baker topped the poll and was also deemed elected.
Hanafins younger party rival Kate Feeney is next in line for a seat with Iindependent Victor Boyhan, Fine Gaels Barry Ward and People Before Profit's Lola Hynes also strongly in contention.
