DANNY Healy-Rae has topped the poll in Kerry and became the first councillor elected in the constituency.

The Independent councillor secured a massive 4,388 first preferences or over two quotas in the Killarney electoral area and was deemed elected on the first count.

Michael Gleeson of the South Kerry Independent Alliance was also elected on the first count, exceeding the 2,034 quota by 89 votes.

It was a day for independents with Brendan Cronin also being elected with his strong performance of 2050 first preferences.
