Clare’s highest profile casualty of the local elections, current mayor, Cllr Joe Arkins (FG) says that he has gone out of a high after the year he has had as mayor.
The abolition of Cllr Arkins’s north clare electoral area forced the Ruan man to contest one of the six seats in the east Clare Killaloe area, losing out to FF newcomer, Alan O’Callaghan by around 200 votes for the last seat.
Speaking after losing his seat, Cllr Arkins said: “I made the decision to run in the new Killaloe when I saw there was no candidate coming forward in my locality.
Cllr Arkins said that he wanted to represented his own community by running in the Killaloe area, but lost a 1,000 votes by not running in the new West Clare area.
He said: "I am going out on a high. I had a great year. It was the year that Clare won two All-Irelands and it was lovely to be mayor at the time of that. I have been really impressed by the way the people of Clare have treated me as mayor.”
He added: “I may not have won the election, but I am going out on a high. I have realised over the last number of days that I was not going to get elected.”
