INDEPENDENT James Breen has topped the poll in the Ennis for the second successive local election.
In the results of the first count of the eight seater, the former TD has secured 1,134 first preference in an electoral area that has the highest number of candidates of any electoral area in the country at 27.
Fine Gael has polled strongly in the eight seater with a real chance of securing four of the seats with Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) again the party’s best performer.
Cllr Brian Meaney (FF) will lose his seat and pay the price of his shock decision last year to switch from the Greens to Fianna Fail.
Meaney polled only 302 seats and was outpolled by the Sinn Fein candidate, Cathal O’Reilly who withdrew from the race on Wednesday after racist comments he made against travellers on Facebook in 2011. O’Reilly received 392 first preferences.
Co-founder of the Clare Crusaders Clinic, Ann Norton looks set to grab a seat after the first time independent candidate secured 821 first preferences.
