Niece of shot IRA woman Mairead Farrell to take seat

A NIECE of the IRA volunteer Mairead Farrell, who was shot dead by the SAS in Gibraltar in 1988, was on track to take a Galway City Council seat for Sinn Fein at the first attempt last night.

Mairead Farrell, 24, named after her late aunt, polled consistently well across the Galway City East Ward of the City Council and was being hailed as Sinn Fein's big winner.

Independent and former mayor, Terry O'Flaherty, swept in at the head of the poll and was elected on the first count alongside fellow Independent and ex-PD chairman, Declan McDonnell.

But sitting Labour Councillor Nuala Nolan fared disastrously, polling just 142 first preferences in the City Council election.
