SAME-sex marriage must be legalised under any future Fine Gael -- Labour coalition, a leading gay rights group urged last night.
The National Lesbian and Gay Federation (NLGF) called on the two parties to commit to legislation that would allow civil marriage for same-sex couples as they negotiate a possible political alliance.
NLGF chair Ailbhe Smyth said: "Fine Gael and the Labour Party have a duty to legislate for equal civil marriage rights for lesbian and gay people. Discriminating against lesbian and gay people in this regard is not acceptable".
While the Labour Party promised to hold a referendum on the issue in its election manifesto, Ms Smyth said that same sex marriage "is non-negotiable."
