A COUNTY councillor who was expected to top the poll in his area has died after a heart attack at his local voting station in Monaghan.

Fine Gael Cllr Owen Bannigan, who was a father of five, passed away in the ambulance on the way to hospital.

Mr Bannigan was a councillor for the past 15 years and is a beef and dairy farmer.

Under the law, a by-election will have to be held in the Ballybay-Clones area to fill his seat.
