Ms Burton said the only choice is to return the current Fine Gael Labour Government after business leaders’ called for a stable Government in this morning’s Irish Independent.

The party leader also ruled out a Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael Coalition with this morning’s opinion poll putting the two at a steady 50pc.

Ms Burton said that she believes that coalition would be “very conservative” with no “social progress.”

“There’s no mandate requested for Fine Gael/Fianna Fáil… I think both find it very difficult,” she added.

The Labour Party continue to wane (7pc) in today’s Paddypower/Red C poll but Ms Burton played down the results.

“The polls are bouncing around the place and I don’t know which one to believe. They’re presenting different pictures”

Ms Burton also added that Ireland would “take a considerable step backwards” if it elected a grouping headed by Sinn Féin.
