Presented by Irish Independent Editor, Fionnan Sheahan, each week between now and election day we’ve three of the most experienced former politicians to give us their valuable knowledge and insights of the forthcoming campaign.

On the first show, the panel discusses the possibility of certain Independents holding the balance of power in the next government, with Bertie Ahern giving his insights as to how to keep the different personalities and agendas happy.

As to when the election is going to happen, the Front Bench was able to give some clues as to why we should expect it to be around February 26th.

With the release of the banking inquiry report, the main question was whether we really learnt anything new after years of interviews and a cost of €6.5m.

And as this week also saw Pat Rabbitte’s farewell speech to the Dail, it was a time for wry reflections as to whether anybody really notices (or cares) as Dail members say their goodbyes.

Such is the rough and tumble of politics and it’s only going to get tougher over the coming weeks.

But there will only be one place to hear the real insights and experience of what it’s like on the campaign trail.

To understand what’s really going on behind-the-scenes, listen to the Front Bench podcast every week as part of Independent.ie’s extensive GE16 coverage.

The Front Bench is available on Independent.ie, iTunes and SoundCloud.
