Taoiseach Enda Kenny's final words to Tánaiste Joan Burton after the 31st Dáil finished up were: "This is not goodbye".
Mr Kenny emerged from Government Buildings shortly after 10am accompanied by Tánaiste Joan Burton.
They shook hands and Mr Kenny made the quip before he got into a State car for the short journey to Áras an Uachtaráin.
The comment was overheard by nearby journalists and made it onto social media site Twitter, alongside several photos of the pair standing outside for what could be the final time.
The Taoiseach then travelled to the Áras where he completed the official paperwork alongside President Michael D Higgins.
This means the 31st Dáil is officially over... and the race for the next one has begun.
